Shopify Shipping Notifications Not Sending? Fix It
A practical diagnostic for Shopify shipping confirmations, shipping updates, out-for-delivery emails, and delivered notifications that fail or arrive incomplete.
Quick 60-second test
Start here: In Shopify Admin, open the order and use the available resend-notification action. If it arrives, the original trigger was skipped. If it does not, confirm the fulfillment timestamp, confirm Send shipment details to your customer now was selected, check spam, then trace the remaining layers below.
This guide covers every layer of the notification chain: fulfillment trigger, carrier event sync, notification settings, and inbox delivery, not just the email template. Native Shopify notifications begin with fulfillment, while the customer journey continues through later carrier scans; that is why a working tracking link and a missing delivered email can coexist on the same order.
When Shopify shipping notifications are not sending, a tracking link can still work on the carrier website while Shopify shows no useful shipment progress. A shipping confirmation can also go out while later out-for-delivery and delivered emails never arrive. To a customer, both failures feel the same: they paid, the parcel disappeared into the delivery network, and support becomes the only place to ask what happened.
The fastest fix is to stop treating this as one email problem. Shopify shipping notifications depend on a chain of events: fulfillment, tracking data, carrier recognition, carrier scans, notification choices, and inbox delivery. Test that chain in order.
First, identify which notification is missing
Shopify documents several separate customer notifications:
- Shipping confirmation: triggered when an order is fulfilled.
- Shipping update: used when tracking information is added or changed after fulfillment.
- Out for delivery: triggered when Shopify receives the corresponding tracking event.
- Delivered: triggered when Shopify receives a delivered event.
These are not interchangeable. If the Shopify fulfillment email was not received, investigate the fulfillment trigger and delivery path. If the shipping confirmation arrived but the delivered notification is not working, rewriting the confirmation template will not fix the missing carrier event.
Shopify also says that out-for-delivery and delivered events depend on data received from the carrier or fulfillment app, and that accuracy and timing vary by carrier. Start by naming the exact missing message and the order where it failed.
A seven-step Shopify shipping notification checklist
1. Shopify fulfillment email not sent? Start with the fulfillment trigger
Open the affected order and inspect its fulfillment. A shipping confirmation is associated with fulfillment, not simply with payment or label creation. If a warehouse or third-party logistics provider creates a label without completing the expected fulfillment action in Shopify, there might be no shipping confirmation event to send.
Compare the timestamps for label creation, fulfillment, and the customer's expected email. This reveals whether the notification failed or its trigger never happened.
2. Check the notification choice used during fulfillment
Shopify lets staff deselect Send shipment details to your customer now while fulfilling an order. For an already fulfilled order, staff can also edit tracking and deselect Send notification email to customer.
Review the exact workflow used by staff, your warehouse, and any fulfillment app. Do not assume that one successful test from Shopify Admin proves an external fulfillment integration uses the same notification choice. Also check whether Shopify Flow, a custom automation, or an app action changes the fulfillment path or suppresses the customer-notification step.
3. Inspect the tracking number and Shopify carrier sync
According to Shopify's order-tracking documentation, Shopify uses tracking information on a fulfilled order to provide updates through the order status page, notification emails, and the Shop app. The Shop app is a separate push-notification channel with its own customer opt-in. A customer seeing a milestone there does not confirm that the email channel is working, so test both channels independently.
Check that the affected fulfillment contains:
- the correct tracking number;
- the correct carrier;
- a working tracking URL; and
- no duplicate or obsolete fulfillment with different tracking data.
If Shopify detects the wrong carrier, select the right one manually. If the carrier is not listed, Shopify advises selecting Other and entering the full carrier tracking URL. A working URL helps the customer reach the carrier, but it does not prove that Shopify receives later milestone events.
Shop app is a separate channel: It sends push notifications only to customers who opted in. Seeing a milestone in Shop does not prove that Shopify sent the corresponding email, so test both channels independently.
4. Separate a working tracking link from synchronized events
This is the step merchants often miss. A tracking page can display current information because the carrier owns that page, while Shopify receives no in-transit, out-for-delivery, or delivered event.
Open one affected Shopify order and the matching carrier page side by side. Record the latest carrier scan and its timestamp. Then inspect the shipment status available in Shopify.
- If both show the same milestone, investigate the notification setting or email delivery.
- If the carrier is current but Shopify is stale, investigate carrier recognition or the fulfillment app's event sync.
- If both are stale, the carrier might not have scanned the parcel yet.
This distinction prevents hours of editing email templates when the missing input is tracking data. It also complements a broader Shopify order-tracking setup audit.
5. Review each Shopify tracking update email setting
In Shopify Admin, go to Settings > Notifications > Customer notifications and inspect the shipping-updated section. Shopify allows merchants to deactivate out-for-delivery and delivered notifications there.
These messages are sent only when the corresponding tracking event arrives. Shopify notes that they are not used for local-delivery orders, which have a separate delivery-confirmation flow. Test the same fulfillment type and carrier your customers use rather than relying on a manually constructed scenario that follows a different path.
6. Shopify order notification not received: test delivery separately
If Shopify and the carrier show the expected event, test delivery separately. Shopify recommends checking spam or junk folders when customers or staff do not receive notifications. It also suggests trying an alternate address with a different email provider if the issue persists.
For a controlled test order, preserve:
- recipient address;
- order and fulfillment IDs;
- notification type;
- trigger timestamp; and
- whether the message reached inbox, spam, or neither.
One missing customer email can be a typo. A pattern across valid addresses and multiple providers is stronger evidence of a sending or configuration problem.
7. Reproduce before changing the template
Run one real-world test through the same system that fulfills production orders. Use a carrier and fulfillment route you actually rely on. Confirm each checkpoint:
| Checkpoint | Evidence to capture |
|---|---|
| Fulfillment | Fulfilled timestamp in Shopify |
| Tracking | Number, carrier, and working URL |
| Carrier event | Exact milestone and scan time |
| Shopify event | Matching status visible in Shopify |
| Notification | Correct message type was enabled |
| Delivery | Message found in inbox or spam |
Change one variable at a time. Otherwise, a successful retest will not tell you which fix mattered.
What to do next: If every checkpoint passes and the notification still does not arrive, contact Shopify Support with the order ID, fulfillment ID, message type, recipient, and timestamps you captured.

What to do when a fulfillment app owns the workflow
Third-party fulfillment services can add tracking information automatically, but Shopify notes that the behavior depends on the service. Ask the provider specific questions:
- Does it create or update the Shopify fulfillment?
- When does it attach the tracking number?
- Does it request a customer notification?
- Does it send later carrier events back to Shopify?
- Which carriers and service levels support milestone updates?
A vague answer such as “tracking is supported” is not enough. You need to know whether that means a clickable URL, synchronized shipment milestones, or both.
Keep customers informed while you investigate
Tracking, notifications, and support should share the same shipment context. When they do not, every sync gap becomes a customer question and a manual investigation.
Even a correct notification flow cannot eliminate every exception. Carrier scans can be delayed, customers can mistype an email address, and split shipments create legitimate confusion. Give customers another trustworthy route to the answer.
A useful post-purchase setup pairs notifications with:
- a clear order-status or branded tracking page;
- plain-language explanations for label-created, in-transit, delayed, and delivered states;
- a visible escalation path for missing or damaged parcels; and
- narrow automation rules for routine questions, with human review for exceptions.

Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify automatically send out-for-delivery emails?
Shopify can send them when the notification is active and a carrier or fulfillment app supplies the corresponding event. Shopify says event sources, accuracy, and timing vary by carrier. Local-delivery orders use a separate confirmation flow.
Why does the carrier link work while Shopify shows no updates?
The link only proves that the carrier page can display tracking. It does not prove that milestone events are reaching Shopify. Compare the latest carrier scan with the shipment state on the same Shopify fulfillment.
Why was my Shopify shipping confirmation email not sent?
Check whether the order was fulfilled and whether Send shipment details to your customer now was selected during fulfillment. If no shipping-confirmation event was triggered, changing the email template will not create one.
Why is Shopify not sending tracking update emails?
Later tracking emails depend on recognized carrier events reaching Shopify. Compare the carrier timeline with Shopify first: if the carrier is current but Shopify is stale, investigate carrier recognition or event sync rather than rewriting the email template.
What if a Shopify order notification was not received?
Verify the address on the order and ask the customer to check spam. Then reproduce the same notification with a controlled test order and a second email provider. Shopify's customer-notification guide documents the relevant triggers and notification choices.
How Trexa supports a clearer post-purchase path
Once the root cause is identified, the longer-term question is whether customers can still get a clear answer during delayed scans, split shipments, and other exceptions.
Trexa's Shopify App Store listing describes a branded tracking page, real-time multi-carrier tracking, AI answers grounded in order data and store policy, and post-purchase analytics. Its Free plan includes 10 premium orders per month, so a merchant can test the tracking and support experience on a bounded set of real orders before considering a paid plan. Proactive delivery alerts are listed on the Pro plan, not the Free plan.
That makes the next step concrete: first prove whether your missing email is a fulfillment, event-sync, setting, or delivery problem. Then test whether a clearer tracking and support surface reduces the customer's need to ask.
